My path into Spirituality has been far from straight. Even saying that makes me feel a little uncomfortable. As a child raised in a devout Christian family, the Straight Path was the one we were encouraged to take, not the winding one. You might say I was born into Spirituality in a religious context. My conditioning will be familiar to many of you who have a religious upbrining.
It beats me to this day why we try to simplify things for our children. We paint a world to them that is black and white with ‘goodies’ and ‘baddies’ and ‘right’ and ‘wrong’. I was a reader and a thinker as a child, and I loved and looked for anything that fed my quest for the mystical and magical in life. My parents couldn’t have hoped for a less cooperative child and this was no doubt one of their life lessons. Things are not black and white. Paths are not straight, but they can be enlightening with companionship and guidance. My path to my current spacious spirituality was convoluted, scary, exciting and ultimately fulfilling. I was given one compass at the start of my life and it pointed in only one direction. Despite my colourful interpretations of scripture it did not give me the tools I needed to unearth the Mysteries for myself. In fact, my religious conditioning downright condemned the tools I needed to forge my path. So the heavy rain of guilt through which I pressed onwards regardless did hamper me somewhat. Fortunately, however, I was born under Aries, which gave me sufficient stubbornness to proceed through barriers set for me by others like a rampant ram. Finally after years of searching I am reunited with my childhood Universe of Magic and Wonder and it’s time for me to share this with the world. All you Spirit Rebels out there who are reading this and getting chills because you know what I am talking about, hello there!
You may not have grown up in a religious setting. Someone very close to me was brought up atheist and yet has undertaken many of the same spiritual experiments and experienced the same confusion as I did, albeit from a slightly different angle. We all have our experience coloured by our conditioning. Maybe you didn’t even realize this until now. But what I want to ask you is – do you want to be a product of your conditioning, or would you like to discover, remember and create your experience as a Spiritual Seeker in this crazy beautiful world we live in? I am publishing a series of blogs entitled “BUT WHY???” designed to introduce you to some of my favourite spiritual practices as well as giving you the opportunity to work with me on a more personal level.
Let me keep this simple. If you are following a religious or spiritual path and struggling to stick with it or if you keep having moments where you think ‘This isn’t right’ – it probably isn’t. What I’m saying is, that maybe it isn’t right for you. If you want to step onto the path of possibility where each turn may yield a new tiger, you’re in the right place. Take my hand sweetness, it’s much friendlier with two.
